Who Should Join The Event?

Technical Field

You have a technical edges. You have usually worked on a specific technology for a significant period of time. You have deep expertise in a technology that very few other people do.

You could be a professor or PHD/postdoc students working with the world’s best researchers and academics. You love your academic career, but you’re frustrated by the amount of impact you can have. You want to see what your work can do in the real world by starting your own business.

Or you could be currently working in tech companies with a large salary but still not feel fulfilment. You find the idea of starting your own company more exciting. You're a type of person who only works at your peak capacity when there is no predictable path to follow. the odds of success are low, and you have to take personal responsibility for failure. You want to push yourself past your limits, force you to learn faster, and maybe want to see that once in a while the impossible is possible.

You could be currently stuck in high income/high expenses situation. You have mortgages/rent/car to pay, children to look after and are enjoying your current lifestyle. Starting a new business may take them away. The solution could be venture-builder programmes that will pay you a salary while you are building your startup with their initial resources and operational capabilities available.

Industry Expert and Business Field

You have experience within a certain industry, and have an insight on how it could be improved. you are constantly frustrated by how your industry works or by how your vertical operates. You have tried to make changes where you work, but feel this has had insufficient impact — you’re ready to change an entire industry. You’re excited about bringing advanced technology to your industry.

You are highly motivated and have skills that can unlock others’ potential. You could be good at sales/marketing, full stack engineers, product management skills...

You want to build a technology startup from the scratch but don't know how. This event is for you. This event will also be an ideal place to find your technical/nontechnical cofounder and raise funding.

Startups with MVP and Early Traction

You are solo-founders or startup teams with MVP/prototype and early traction. You want to find a right funding service, incubator/accelerator/venture builder programmes to help you build your startup successfully. You don't know how to raise funds, how to scale. You don't have enough funds to expand the team and push on marketing/sale campaigns. You can't find a tech co-founder. You can bootstrapping with your own money but you still need money to cover your personal living costs. You can build your startup yourself without joining any accelerators/venture builders but you may have many mistakes that waste tons of money and years until your startup successes.

You don't need to participate in the whole 54 hours event. You can join on the Demo Day Session only on Sunday to pitch your startup to an investment committee.

In a Meeting

Inspired by Techstars Startup Weekends, London Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. Beginning with Friday night pitches, team formation, the event continues through brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, culminating in Sunday night demos and presentations for funding.

Participants create working startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams hear talks by industry leaders and receive valuable feedback from entrepreneurs, metors. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education.

Whether you are looking for feedback on an idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, funding or a team to help you execute, London Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.

Q: Is this event for me?

A: If you are interested in entrepreneurship the answer is most likely yes. Whether you are a serial entrepreneur or new to the startup scene, you’ll fit right in as long as you are motivated to build a product or startup and are open to new ideas. We believe that great ideas can come from anywhere.

The event is intended to be a collaborative and inclusive forum for sharing, learning, building, and having fun. We expect each member of the startup community to be inclusive of all people and their ideas at London Startup Weekend and we welcome all, regardless of experience, industry or background.

Q: How can I find ideas?

A: We recommend you should read two articles from EF: Where do ideas come from? and Finding your Edge

Q: What makes London Startup Weekends different from Techstars Startup Weekends?

  • More commitment participants

  • Cofounder matching focus and funding

  • More coaching sessions

  • Focus more on the technical field and industry experts

  • On the Demo Day, the teams will pitch to an investment committee and have a chance to get investment up to $100k

  • This event is available for both aspiring founders and pre-seed startup teams with investment readiness.

Q: Do I have to participate in all three days?

A: Apart from the organizing team, mentors, speakers, event volunteers and judges, everyone who participates in the event is expected to participate in all three days. This is important not only to preserve your own learning experience but also to minimize distractions or disruptions for the team you choose to join. At many London Startup Weekends, a “Sunday Presentation Only” registration option is available for those wishing to only view the teams’ final pitch presentations. We welcome any friends, family or colleagues you would like to invite to watch your final presentation to see all you have accomplished in just one weekend.

Note: If your startup has already had a MVP with early traction, investment readiness and you only would like to pitch your startup to an investment committee for fundraising, you can participate in the Demo Day session only at 5 pm Sunday 17th July 2022.

Q: How do I register?

A: Every London Startup Weekend event has a corresponding website with a registration page. There are typically different types of tickets for different skill sets, like ‘Business’, ‘Designer’, ‘Technical’ or ‘Enthusiast’ for example. Organizing teams sometimes track this to ensure they do outreach to a diverse group with a range of participant backgrounds and skillsets. This is done to maximize the event’s value for each participant by making sure teams are balanced and effective. You can choose the ticket type closest to what your experience is - don’t worry if nothing precisely matches your background!

Q: Do I need a team?

A: Everyone who attends the event as a participant is expected to come to the event without a team and then join and participate with a team at the event. This is important to preserve the London Startup Weekend educational experience. The ideal team consists of members from diverse backgrounds and experiences who collaborate to build a great minimum viable product (MVP) using the Lean Canvas framework. The more people you have on your team to help you do market research and business model development, the quicker you’ll develop an MVP to pitch on Sunday.

Q: What ticket type should I purchase to pitch an idea?

A: Pitching is open to every participant! We recommend you purchase the ticket that best represents your skillset.

Note: If your startup has already had a MVP with early traction and investment readiness and you only would like to pitch your startup to an investment committee for fundraising, you should select a "Startups" ticket type so you can participate in the Demo Day session only at 5 pm Sunday 17th July 2022.
